Continued in service and after the war as Brigadier Inspector in Virginia Militia and advanced to rank of Major. They lived on the Timber Ridge plantation, Rockbridge Co., Virginia, until the death of Samuel. Samuel was married in 1783 to Elizabeth Blair Paxton (daughter of John Paxton of Rockbridge Co., Virginia). She was born about 1765 and died August 1831. They had nine children.
